Well, I tried to be a blogger . . .

Oh Boy. Where to start. . .

First, the show opened 2 weeks ago and this blog has been silent the whole time. Working on setting up the show was all consuming, 12-14 hour days, and blogging was never high enough on the list.
But I did take some pix to share. So here are a few images of working on the setup, especially the WONDERFUL volunteers who came by and pitched in. Mysterious Killian and Annelise, above, after sewing. Paul and Rod, glass turners at the kiln. Jeff and Beverly, gifted painters.

And here's an amusing tale of how not to choose the music for forming hot glass. . .

Fast forward about a week . . . Almost Opening Night.

Sorry, no pictures from the opening, but here are a few of the artworks in place.

"Rave". Blends blue and red. Slowly fades between the two.

Irene with neon "A Quick Trip To Vegas"

A couple of views of "Immersion". It also has a soundscape and the smell of the fruit flavorings that came in the recycled barrels. LED illuminated, the whole system uses about 30watts, like a refrigerator light bulb.

So I guess I'm not a very good blogger, too slow to sit at the computer to write. And setting up an art show takes a LOT of silly work. The result is very satisfying, especially when people see the work and respond and react. Ahhh, I get it.

Here's Irene setting up her Stacklage piece.

And a partial view of the gallery. . .

I'll say goodbye for now with an image of the Green Wiggle Guy, hanging in the window. Thanks for checking up on the show. Remember, it'll be open for another 3 weeks, tu-Sat, 12-6, at 7th and Mendocino in Santa Rosa.

Ciao,

Patrick

Night Vision: 8 days to opening

Night Vision: Contemporary Illuminated Sculpture
January 16 thru February 20, 2009
Phantom Gallery, Santa Rosa, CA
OPENING DAY MINUS 8 DAYS

I started moving into the gallery yesterday, but spent most of the day driving around purchasing materials for displays. The biggest challenge thus far is controlling the ambient light so that the light sculptures will show well.
Last night my friend Rod Hannon brought an historic piece of Cristo's Running Fence, a piece of fabric 16ft wide by 65ft long. We worked into the night hanging from the ceiling to create a room for the Passion Fruit Enviro Wall.
Here are the luminaries for the Enviro Wall loaded into my truck this morning. I'll be meeting my wonderfully helpful sister Nancy Morgn and niece Killian Morgan to begin moving the larger artworks and sewing curtains.
It's going to be a long day but there is hope that the space will be transformed. I can't overstate the value of helpful friends and family.

Inside the Green Zone; 10 Days to Go

Okay. 10 more days.

The To Do list is still very long but most of the artwork is at a good stage of completion (or nearing completion). The Green Wiggle Guy, our Official Master of Ceremonies, has resolved his control issues and is cooperating fully with his maker, following my every command. Of course, this means that only 3 or 4 major new pieces are still to be finished. And the gallery space is just an empty room, waiting to be transformed.

Here's a video tease of the MC in action.

What do you think? Shall I name him MC Wiggle? Give him a little bling?

The big focus today is spreading the word, calling friends, email, postcards, advertising banners. The show may go on but it's not much fun if no one comes to the party. Actually, I'm sure it's giong to be a blast.

2 Week Countdown to Opening Night

Hi!
Patrick Scott here.

Irene Ange and I are in a frenzy readying new work for the Night Vision: Contemporary Illuminated Sculpture show. Meanwhile, Bruce Shapiro is back in Minnesota installing a large piece of sculpture.

2 weeks to Opening Night (1-16-09) at the Phantom Gallery in Santa Rosa, CA.
The Wiggle Guy shown above is functioning but sucking up many hours of trying to get the stepper motor to talk to the microcontroller. Oh boy. I wish Bruce was in town. Lighting, shiny stainless salvage and motion control. This piece shook crack a few people up. I'll be posting a video on YouTube today.

Here's another new piece that is up and running.

The Large Illuminated Array, working title Passion Fruit, named for the sweet fruit smell coming from the barrels. It works fine. Just needs some programming tweaking.

Programmable LED array with recycled industrial food barrels create a light room.
Colors change and fade.
Motion sensor activates response to viewer's presence.
Pretty groovy.
More to come.
Back to work.
Thanks for checking in.
You're invited to the Opening Party!
